Admittedly just from Dublin to Sutton and sometimes Howth, was that they were usually either blue letters on cream or red on cream, but I may be totally mistaken (but I never saw a white on black). But the ones I repainted forty years ago in red and cream look in perfectly original condition from surviving that number of years in the elements in Belgium, so who knows, but white on black to me is not what GNRI did in their last years which I actually saw in just one place]. So my repainting many years ago (always for me the front of the sign) relected a desire of desplaying it rather preserving it, which was quite oftenly unattractive in its original state.

On 10 May there was a major auction of over 550 items of Irish railwayana at Purcell's in Birr, Co. Offaly. There were upwards of 350 single line staffs. GNRI nameplates sold were Loughs Derg, Neagh, and Galteemore (which, incidentally, was purchased in May 2017 for €3200 and resold at GCR in September 2017 for £6600) and SLNCR Lough Erne. There were a number of cabside plates, around 20 worksplates, 8 single line tablets, 7 wagon etc. plates, carriage plates and lamp tablets as well as many other items not seen before. Up to January this site has relied, for this auction coverage, on that published by Tim Petchey in the June Railway Antiques Guide (RAG), with his permission. The separate four pages, in jpg format, and the 4 page pdf file of Tim's listing, which include his insights (particularly on lamps and undetermined items) can still be found be found at www.irishrailwayana.com/Plus. The Birr auction catalogue with many pictures can be found at Birr railwayana auction. As of January 2018 the data has all been transcribed here, with some of my suggested interpretations in italics. The data is now in a format where it can be included in the much delayed update to the observed prices on the company pages. The staffs will, as usual, appear on the 'Ireland South' page.
